How will I know what subjects my child will learn this year?
Michigan Islamic Academy follows the Michigan Grade Level
Content Expectations for each grade. The curriculum is
posted on the MIA website. At Open
House, at the start of each year, Pre-K through 12th grade
teachers present parents with a comprehensive overview of
what will be taught in the classroom. Hard copies of the
subject curriculum can be requested in the school office at
any time.
Is MIA accredited?
Michigan Islamic Academy is recognized by the Michigan
Department of Education as a private academic institution.
We are currently in the process of seeking accreditation
through the North Central Association (NCA).
Are
student assessments conducted throughout the year?
Teachers conduct on-going and formal assessments throughout
the year. Report cards are issued at the end of each term.
Assessments include running records for reading, rubrics for
writing, and formal assessments with math concepts.
Additional assessments include portfolios, student projects
and presentations. Students in grades three through nine
also take MEAP tests every year.
Students in grade 11 take the Michigan Merit Exams (MME).
Is it necessary to schedule an appointment to see the
facility and/or talk to the teachers?
Michigan Islamic Academy has a closed campus policy for the
safety and security of our children. Tours of our facility
should be arranged ahead of time by appointment to avoid a
long wait in the office. To avoid interruptions to class
instruction, if a parent would like to meet a teacher, it is
best to set an appointment when the teacher is available.
What are the typical class sizes?
We
are pleased to offer a low student to teacher ratio. The
average class ratio is 16:1 for elementary students and 13:1
for middle and high school students.
Are all students required to wear uniforms?
Pre-K students do not have uniforms. Students in
Kindergarten through 4th grade must wear uniforms which can
be purchased from French toast (www.frenchtoast.com).
For student uniforms in grades 5 through 12 please see the
uniform tab on the school website for detailed information.
Does Michigan Islamic Academy Offer Extracurricular
activities?
MIA
currently offers
Student Government Organization, National Honor Society,
elementary
boys soccer team, middle and high school basketball team,
karate classes, School newsletter, AAA Patrol, Science
League, Math Counts, Girls Scouts, and the Model UN
program.
How can parents get involved?
Michigan Islamic Academy features a flourishing Parent
Teacher Organization with many opportunities for parents to
volunteer and coordinators who organize various projects for
the school. A parent may volunteer for specific projects by
filling out a volunteer form in the office. Parents may also
notify their child’s homeroom teacher or attend parent
meetings to sign up for projects.
How big is the school?
The student population for the 2009-2010 academic year is
203 students. Michigan Islamic Academy’s campus features a
new playground, conforming to all state regulations, 2
basketball courts, and a natural area. Traverwood Library,
(5 minutes walking distance) is a state of the art facility
which serves as a useful resource for students and teachers.

colleges and universities including the University of
